MOST RECENT ENTRY: Hope for Sexual Abuse Victims

by Dr. Mike Atwater - Sunday, July 03, 2011

According to The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACP.org), child sexual abuse has been reported up to 80,000 times a year, but the number of unreported instances is probably far greater because of the reluctance and fear of child to report such events. Not only are the legal procedures for validating an episode difficult but the long-term emotional and psychological damage of sexual abuse can be devastating.

It is estimated that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will have experienced an episode of sexual abuse while under the age of 18 years old (Botash, Ann, MD, Pediatric Annual, May 1997). Sixty-seven percent of all sexual assault victims reported to law enforcement were juveniles, 34% were under the age of 12 and one of every seven  victims were under the age of six (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2000).

Most children are abused by someone they know and trust, although boys are more likely than girls to be abused outside the family. A study in three states showed 96% of reported rape survivors under age 12 knew the attacker. Four percent of the offenders were strangers, 20% fathers, 16% were relatives and 50% were friends or acquaintances (Advocates for Youth, 1995).

As a victim of incest herself, Jan Frank understands the confounding feelings with which victims wrestle and she offers empathy, understanding and proven steps toward recovery. Each step is explained in its own chapter: from Facing the Problem to Tracing Behavioral Difficulties and Symptoms, to Rebuilding Self-Image and Relationships, etc., and eventually Restoration. The book concludes with an excellent section featuring answers to questions most often asked by abuse victims and those who love them. Clinicians and their clients will benefit from a touching and therapeutic journey through the Door of Hope.
