May is Mental Health Awareness Month. The nation’s largest and oldest community based network dedicated to helping all Americans achieve wellness by living mentally healthier lives, Mental Health America, continues its focus with helpful articles, news and education on mental health and healthy living. On its website MHA say, “Good mental health is much more than the absence of illness – it’s about being able to handle life’s challenges and even flourish.” This is great advice, especially for parents.
Raising healthy and happy children are the goals of all parents. By focusing on their own physical and mental health, parents model for the next generation the requisite behaviors of health. Anger is a natural response to the stressors and challenges of life, but mentally healthy individuals are able to channel their anger while moving forward to resolve conflict without hurting others.
In their book, Anger Control Parenting, Vivian Lamphear, PhD and Sherry Marlar teach parents evidence-based techniques and strategies to diffuse anger driven situations. Anger Control Parenting (ACP) combines parent anger control and child behavior management training in one easy to learn package.
