Artificial Intelligence for Mental Health Professionals is a peer-reviewed primer that offers a clinician-focused introduction to what AI is—and what it isn't. As AI tools become more common in therapy apps, documentation systems, and research workflows, mental health professionals are being asked to navigate technologies that weren't covered in their training. This book is your essential primer to understanding what's emerging, what matters, and how to use AI in a way that supports your clients, your practice, and your professional values.

Written for mental health professionals this book provides a practical roadmap for engaging with AI as a collaborator—not a substitute. It starts with a plain-language overview of how AI and data work, then explores real-world applications across seven psychology specialties. Later chapters address ethical, cultural, and regulatory challenges and introduce structured frameworks for evaluating whether an AI tool is safe, useful, and appropriate in context. The book closes with a forward-looking view of how AI may shape future roles and practices.

AI isn't a clinician, but it has the potential to help clinicians deliver better care, more efficiently. From surfacing insights to reducing administrative burden, AI offers meaningful support for psychological practice—when used with a clear understanding of what AI can and cannot do. This book equips professionals to evaluate when, where, and how AI can be integrated into the human work at the heart of mental health care.

Co-authored by a licensed psychologist and two technologists working at the forefront of AI in mental health, this book answers critical questions such as:

  • What is AI, and how does it relate to mental health/psychological work?
  • How do AI systems learn, and what makes their data trustworthy—or not?
  • What applications are already in use across mental health subfields?
  • What ethical, cultural, and regulatory issues should professionals anticipate?
  • How can you tell whether an AI tool is clinically relevant and ready for practice?

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the clinician will be able to:

  • Describe two reasons why mental health professionals should develop a foundational understanding of artificial intelligence within their professional roles.
  • Articulate how modern AI systems generate responses by predicting likely word patterns, and explain the clinical implications of hallucinations, automation bias, and overreliance on AI-generated content.
  • Illustrate the difference between task-specific (narrow) AI and hypothetical general AI and describe why understanding this distinction is essential for selecting and supervising AI tools in psychological practice.
  • Explain why data quality and bias in training data can affect the safety, accuracy, and fairness of AI tools used in mental health care.
  • Differentiate between structured data (e.g., rating scales, checklists) and unstructured data (e.g., therapy notes, transcripts), and describe how data quality and representativeness influence AI tool performance.
  • Describe how AI tools can help make therapy more accessible and support clients between sessions.
  • Put into words how AI can help forensic psychologists evaluate competency, detect deception, and support legal decisions.
  • Communicate how AI tools are being used to improve hiring, training, and employee well-being in the workplace.
  • Describe how AI tools are used to support personalized learning, early intervention, and emotional well-being in school settings.
  • Tell others how AI tools are used in health psychology to personalize care, monitor patient needs, and improve access to treatment.
  • Describe how AI tools are being used to support research design, data analysis, and hypothesis generation in psychological science.
  • Outline key legal, ethical, and privacy challenges when using AI in psychological practice, and explain how clinicians can use AI responsibly.
  • Explain ethical risks associated with AI use in mental health practice—including privacy, transparency, accountability, and bias—and describe strategies clinicians can use to maintain professional responsibility when integrating AI into care.
  • Identify practical evaluation frameworks clinicians can use to assess the safety, effectiveness, and ethical use of AI tools.
  • Describe how emerging more holistic AI solutions—such as co-pilots, workflow assistants, multi-modal AI therapy assistants, and AI-powered relationship care platforms—may shape the future of mental health.
